Jewel Skaggs

Deloris Jewel Skaggs, 81 passed away peacefully at home in West Jefferson, Ohio on Saturday, February 24, 2024. Born on March 6, 1942, in Ronda, West Virginia, along Cabin Creek, to Thelma Marie Hicks and Edgar Lydia McCarty.  On March 26, 1971, Jewel married the love of her life, Danny Skaggs. As a longtime resident of West Jefferson, she spent her time coaching youth girls sports, selling Roughrider gear at Mabe's Sporting Goods, and most recently retired from Jefferson Local Schools, after working many years in the cafeteria. Her husband, children, and grandchildren were the highlights of her life.  

 She is preceded in death by her parents, sisters Evelyn "Sis" Buttrick and Mellicenia "Faye" Breeden, and brothers Ernest McCarty and Tommy Withrow.

 Jewel is survived by her husband of 52 years, Danny, children Allen (Lydia) McCall, Tammy Melfi, Tonya (Herby) Brandstetter, Deanna (John) Bumgardner, Stephanie (Terry) Hitzeman and former son-in-law Mike Melfi. Grandchildren Candice (Justin) Metzger, Danielle Brandstetter, Kyle (Effy) Brandstetter, Travis, Shane and Maggie Bumgardner, Alaina and Adam Hitzeman, great-grandchildren Iris Brandstetter, Eve and Lane Metzger, brother Harold "Buddy" McCarty, sister Brenda (Tom) Pitchford and many special nieces, nephews, close friends and neighbors. 

 Jewel had a wonderful sense of humor, and always appreciated the little things in life. She found solitude and joy in life's little blessings rather than material things.  When you were with her you truly knew how special and loved you were. 

 The family will welcome friends on THURSDAY, February 29, 2024, from 5pm-7pm at RADER-McDONALD-TIDD FUNERAL HOME, 1355 W. Main Street, West Jefferson, Ohio, 43162. Funeral Services will be held at the Funeral Home at 1:00pm on FRIDAY, March 1, 2024. Jewel will be laid to rest at Hampton Cemetery, West Jefferson, Ohio.
